Comprehensive Civil Engineering Services

Behind every successful build is the civil engineering you do not see—the earthworks, drainage, water services, and access that allow a site to function. Northland's high rainfall, expansive clays, and dispersed rural servicing mean civil design across the region requires custom, site-specific drafting rather than generic standard details.

The RS Eng team provides civil engineering across Northland for domestic and multi-residential homes, commercial developments, industrial sites, Papakāinga, subdivisions, and public infrastructure. From a single house platform to a multi-lot development, we design for reliable performance and prepare the detailed documentation required for council approval. We carry out necessary engineering calculations, draft construction plans, and coordinate directly with local authorities to manage the consenting process.

Engineering Services

Our multi-disciplinary team delivers practical civil designs from initial concept and consent through to construction monitoring, scaled to suit the exact requirements of your project and site.

When Do You Need Civil Engineering?

Civil engineering input is required or strongly recommended in the following situations:

Request a Consultation

  • Building or developing a site
Most new builds need driveway, drainage and stormwater design, and often earthworks to form a level, stable building platform. On sloping or poorly draining Northland sites this work is critical — and council will expect it documented in your consent application.
  • Subdividing land
Subdivisions live or die on their civil engineering: earthworks, roading and access, and the three waters (water supply, wastewater and stormwater). These need to be designed to NZS 4404 and council standards and documented for resource consent and engineering approval.
  • Commercial and industrial development
Larger sites bring larger civil requirements — heavy-duty pavements, significant stormwater management, and servicing for higher demand. We design the civil works that support the structure and satisfy the consent conditions.
  • Upgrading public or council infrastructure
Roading, drainage and water network projects for councils and developers need civil design that balances durability, maintainability and environmental performance. We have extensive experience across the Whangārei, Far North and Kaipara districts.

What Makes Northland Civil Conditions Different?

Northland’s geology and climate shape every civil design. Understanding the local conditions explains why generic details often don’t work here.

Request a Consultation

  • High-intensity rainfall is a defining feature of the region. Drainage and stormwater have to be sized for Northland’s heavy downpours and ex-tropical storm events, not national averages.
  • Expansive clays and soft ground affect earthworks, pavements and buried services. Clay that shrinks and swells, or soft alluvial soils with low bearing capacity, can crack pavements and damage pipework if the design doesn’t account for the ground.
  • Hilly terrain and access mean roading, driveways and earthworks often involve cut and fill, retaining and careful sediment control on slopes — common across Northland’s lifestyle and coastal subdivisions.
  • Dispersed, often unserviced sites are the norm outside the main centres. Many properties have no public water, wastewater or stormwater connection, so the civil design has to provide on-site solutions that comply with council and regional rules. An RS Eng civil design is tailored to your actual site and the local conditions.
How the Process Works

We follow a clear process to understand your site, design the civil works, and deliver documentation ready for consent and construction.

Request a Consultation

  • Step 1 — Get in touch
Tell us your site address and an overview of your project. We’ll advise on the civil engineering required and provide a fee estimate.
  • Step 2 — Site assessment and survey
We review the site, levels, services and constraints — coordinating with any geotechnical or survey information — so the design is grounded in real site data.
  • Step 3 — Design and documentation
We design the earthworks, drainage, servicing and access, and prepare the civil plans and specifications required for building or resource consent.
  • Step 4 — Consent support and construction monitoring
We support your consent application and, during construction, provide monitoring and the sign-offs councils require. Timeframes depend on project scale; we’ll give you a realistic programme up front.

FAQs

Civil engineers design the parts of a project that deal with the land and services — earthworks and site levels, driveways and roads, stormwater and drainage, water supply and wastewater connections — and prepare the plans and documentation for consent and construction.

Often, yes. Even one dwelling usually needs driveway, drainage and stormwater design, and sometimes earthworks. On a straightforward site this is modest; on a sloping or poorly draining site it’s more involved. We tailor the input to the site.

Yes. Earthworks (cut and fill) and drainage design are core civil services. We design them to suit your ground conditions and council requirements and provide the documentation needed for consent.

Yes. Subdivisions are a major part of our civil work — roading, three waters, earthworks and the associated consenting and engineering sign-off.

We provide civil engineering across Northland, including Whangārei, Kerikeri and the Far North, and Mangawhai and the Kaipara.
